WOLVISTON’S FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON IS A CONFIDENCE BOOSTER!
Wolviston Juniors 4 v Stockton West End 2
This was Wolviston’s third league game of the season in their new division and after two disappointing losses, they were in dire need of a win. They started confidently against an alert and enthusiastic Stockton side and dominated the majority of the first half, creating a string of chances that should have been converted into goals, but the finishing was scrappy, a sign of desperation, that a little more composure would have solved. Stockton made several breaks and created one or two chances but never really looked like threatening the Wolviston net, until a goal mouth scuffle created serious confusion between defenders and keeper and they were gifted a scrappy first goal as it trundled in from a weak shot when the keeper was unsighted. Although under pressure, the Wolviston defence played well, with William’s showing outstanding pace and commitment. Wolviston fought back hard, but there opportunities were never exploited and half time saw Stockton 1-0 up.
Wolviston were ready for the fight back and launched several attacks that were worrying the Stockton defence, especially as their first keeper was injured in a 50/50 tackle and taken off in the first half. Despite the run of play, Stockton scored again when a corner was cleared and their striker whipped in the ball as it landed at his feet. Wolviston immediately picked up the pace and after several high tension attacks, scored their first when Richardson slipped a great ball through to Wilkie who scored comfortably. Wolviston’s second came shortly after with a long through ball to Richardson who’s strength and pace beat the defence and a low shot skimmed past the keeper for number two. Stockton were shaken and this showed in the defensive mode they adopted. Wolviston pressed home with new confidence and scored again when Richardson broke free and hammered home a narrow angle shot for 3-2.
Their tails up and sensing their first win this season, Wolviston continued to pile on pressure and a cross from Plunkett whizzed over the heads of defenders and attackers in the box and came to Brogan, who took on two and powered in a shot from 10 yards that sealed Stockton’s fate.
